weather forecasters LIE!

September 1st, 2007

I don't get it. All the weather people get their raw data from the same source, so how come one (TWC) says east winds at 6 and another (airsports) says north at 5? TWC says chance of showers in the afternoon and airsports doesn't, and the truth is there's a chance of showers in the afternoon. So I should ignore airsports, but they got cool graphics. And cool graphics are where it's at.

Shower time, then go set up a glider and see about doing a little aviating.

Oh and we're gonna join the Cottonwood chamber of commerce. Cool? It's only 75 bucks so even if they don't find us an LZ it's a good thing to do.

Oh wow Len said yesterday that An Important Guy from the FAA will be up on launch today.

I think we're going home today too. I'd like to fly the whole weekend, but the new house needs a lot of attention. Furniture begins showing up next week and we don't even know what color we're painting stuff. I'm almost ready to paint the 2 spare bedrooms, but that's not where any furniture is going so WTF? Window treatment too. bleh. Oh well. Maybe South Mountain tomorrow? Maybe Monday?

---------

58 people used the online registration utility for (I think) 54 registrations. Not bad, but the whole process needs review. Like a check box for if you are registering or not so that one form can be used for all features. And drop-down boxes for extra dinners. The raffle wasn't pushed enough I think, but either way it needs to be easier to order raffle tickets. Oh well eh? Not bad for the first online registration we've done I guess.

Bye!

The new Mingus Mountain LZ

August 31st, 2007
The new Mingus Mountain LZ
The new Mingus Mountain LZ

Okay maybe not. Maybe it's the campsite with the Eagle set up so's people would be all excited about buying a raffle ticket so's we can make some money off it. Either way, it's first day of the fly-in and the camping area is about half full. It'll be about double full by tomorrow. We got a room at Motel6 cuz we like showers. Speaking of which, it's raining a bit so we could be naked on launch and get the same thing that Motel6 charges us for. Sort of...

Shaw Butte

July 10th, 2007

We're moving. I was cleaning out the garage and found this pinned on a bulletin board.
Monday August 14th 1989
Temp 104 degrees. Launched from the Butte at 1:50 p.m. got above launch out front. Got low over LZ. Found therm over rock outcropping North of LZ. Took therm up to 7400 and drifted with it to Shadow Mountain. Headed for the Pond. Was at 6000 at the C.A.P. Was at 4000 at the Pond. Got down to 500 agl and caught therm to 8000. Headed for the wide spot. Got to wide spot and took therm up to 9500. Made it to the river at 9400 msl. Cloudbase was around 10500. Wimped out. Didn't go over the Rim. Thanks Scotty for driving. 1hr. 45min. Lite Mystic 166

See, I used to have fun :))

South at Mingus

June 26th, 2007

Well as we all know, when it's coming over the back at Mingus and not too strong, it's generally ok to fly, but beware the turbulence. Finally got my self up to the hill last Saturday and hucked off before it blew down completely. Me, Bad Randy, and Mike A. were the ones who got to enjoy the rasty, tatterted, punchy, lift/sink/lift/sink/sink/... you get the picture.
Hey, I hadn't flown for a month and I needed some air. You know how it is.... I don't know what goes on in my feeble mind, cuz the last time I had the opportunity to bail off in the same conditions, that little voice said nahhhhhhhhhh. Too rowdy. Where was that voice Saturday? Stuffed inside my harness with my spare brain no doubt. Don't get me wrong, it was major fun, just a couple of times getting dumped and pushed out of line, but after about 20 minutes of a death grip on the bar, I was ready to be on the ground.
Oh yeah, that was fun too. All I can say is thank God for wheels

He seemed like such a nice vanilla wafer........

June 14th, 2007

Ask me sometime what that title means. It's one of those life moments you never forget. No big deal, just funny :-/

Be prepared to go XC at the Butte if you're flying with Kunio. He's got a key and he's not afraid to use it.

Great meeting at Mingus for June. Lot's of good stuff and entertainment........ Paul, pass that over here:D

It's hot today. 110 in the Valley of the Sun, and yes, it is a DRY heat. Really not too bad if you're a turkey vulture.

I'm on call this weekend. If you put your gloves on, we can set up our divers at the Butte without getting 3rd degree burns on our pinkies. Call me. I have a key.

Later, jd
